Do you Clip?

Proverbs 31:10

“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.”

Recently I have been struggling with the question: What is a good wife? Last night my husband and I were hanging out with a good friend and I noticed my husband’s toenails were too long. I didn’t think much of clipping his toenails in front of our friend until a few minutes into it our friend was looking out me with a face of disbelief. He mentioned that he had heard of stuff like that but hadn’t really seen it in practice. Now this is really a silly example but I have had lots of things stand out to me of late that made me ask myself am I a good wife? Not saying that toenail clipping makes one a bad or good wife, it just got me thinking. I would say two of my good friends are married and that they are both great wives, one of them I would say is the toenail clipping wife and the other one is not. So, what does that mean? One is a better spouse than the other? No, I think it just means that we have different styles of being spouses because we are married to completely different types of guys. My brother recently said to me “why don’t you hurry up and have babies.” I want to be a good wife but I struggle with my sole identity being found in relationships that I have, whether it is being married or being a mom (which I am not yet). It’s important for me to be identified also for my accomplishments and not just for my spouse’s, family members or kids. Don’t get me wrong, I love being married and I look forward to having kids someday, but I also struggle with wanting to accomplish something great and wonderful other than great relationships, not just that I can pick a good man or have decent kids.

  1. Yep, we all know I clip.

And you’ll be a mom soon enough – enjoy your sleep/sanity while you still have it ;-)

  2. Hmmm. Beign a very extroverted person, is there any greater accomplishmnet you can obtain than the impact you have on other people through your relationships? Might not you greatest accomplishments be the impact you have on those around you?
    Just a thought.
PS. I think what your brother actually said was “are you ever planning on having kids?”. :)
